Συνοπτική περιγραφή:

Το project αφορά στην οργάνωση εκθεσιακού γεγονότος από τους/τις φοιτητές/τριες, το οποίο θα συνίσταται στην παρουσίαση ιδεών / έργων τους σχετικά με τη δημιουργία / κατασκευή / εφεύρεση νέων αντικειμένων ή  με την επιλογή ή το μετασχηματισμό ήδη υπαρχόντων αντικειμένων, τα οποία θα ορίζονται/αναδεικνύονται/διερευνώνται ως «φιλοσοφικά αντικείμενα». Πρόκειται για ένα παιδαγωγικό-μυητικό / ερευνητικό σχέδιο, με απώτερο στόχο μία ορισμένη ευαισθητοποίηση των συμμετεχόντων στην αναγνώριση και τον προσδιορισμό του φιλοσοφικού στοιχείου. Το ερευνητικό ερώτημα στο οποίο παραπέμπει το εγχείρημα, είναι διττό και αφορά στον προσδιορισμό αφενός της έννοιας του αντικειμένου και αφετέρου της φιλοσοφικής του ποιότητας ή αλλιώς στη δυνατότητα και τους τρόπους ενός αντικείμενου να οριστεί / κατανοηθεί ως φιλοσοφικό αλλά και στη δυνατότητα του φιλοσοφικού να συναρτηθεί με την έννοια και τους τρόπους του αντικειμένου. Στo project ενσωματώνεται, ως βασική του διάσταση, η καταγραφή της ερευνητικής διαδρομής των φοιτητών/τριών από τη σύλληψη στη διερεύνηση, από τον αναστοχασμό και την ανταλλαγή σχολίων μέσα στην ομάδα στο σχεδιασμό και από την υλοποίηση στην παρουσίαση / έκθεση. Στη διάρκεια αυτή αναδεικνύεται και ερευνάται σε ένα βαθμό η σχέση της φιλοσοφίας με την έννοια της κατασκευής, της παραστατικότητας και της επιτέλεσης (performance) συνδέοντας έτσι το εγχείρημα με μορφές τέχνης και λόγου. Ο στόχος της έκθεσης των «αντικειμένων» δεν προεξοφλεί, ούτε η τελική έκθεση των αντικειμένων δεν επικυρώνει μια καταφατική τοποθέτηση έναντι των αφετηριακών ερευνητικών ερωτημάτων.

ABOUT THE SYMPOSIUM

Creative Time and Fast Forward Festival will come together in Athens to co-present On Homelands and the Stateless as the World Tilts Right, an international symposium investigating the challenges facing artists and activist communities under our prevailing economic and political conditions.

The symposium brings together representatives from cultural organizations across the globe and working locally (North America, South-East Asia, Middle East, Latin America, Europe, South Asia, Southern Africa, Greece), who have each invited artists, activists, social workers, and scholars from the same geography, to share critical, practice-based perspectives on art and politics as experienced from their specific regions.

WALKING WOMEN

A programme of events that places women at the centre of discussions and debates about walking and art. Part of UTOPIA 2016: A Year of Imagination and Possibility – Four Seasons of events, exhibitions and new commissions celebrating the idea of utopia to mark the 500th anniversary of Thomas More’s influential text.
The invisibility of women in what appears as a canon of walking is conspicuous; where they are included, it is often as an ‘exception’ to an unstated norm, represented by a single chapter in a book or even a footnote.

How do we re-write a canon? How do we re-balance the perception of art, artists, and the use of walking as a creative practice? Can we not only imagine a future in which gender bias and skewed vision is destroyed, but actively build the pathway there?

These events are a step on that path. Bringing together artists from across disciplines – theatre makers, writers, sculptors, film makers, poets, live artists and visual artists with academics, curators and cultural critics to discuss, present, create, record, broadcast and make public the work of WALKING WOMEN.

The crisis of representative democracies, participation, and civil society burnout: How can we use public space for the perspective of an enlightenment in the 21st century? Public space is intrinsically linked to the parameters of each particular culture and society and its historical changes. With worldwide migration, social conflicts, and global economic and financial interests or the emancipation from authoritarian structures, public space has been facing massive challenges over the last decades. Across the globe, it has become the scene of violent changes and fundamental paradigm shifts. Between security and surveillance, participation and commercialisation, artistic and social freedom and the demonstration of power, public space is where the future of democracy and the quality of life is being decided.

Against this background, architect, theoretician and activist Eyal Weizman explores the anatomy of public space. South African curator Gabi Ngcobo describes the struggle for public space. Peter Cachola Schmal, Curator of the German Pavilion at this year’s International Architecture Exhibition in Venice, asks whether our arrival cities are the catalysts of social and cultural conflicts from mass migration in Europe. With international curators and artists, architect Eva Franch i Gilabert discusses how artists, designers, architects, curators and cultural institutions stage and construct real and symbolic forms of power and authority.

Under the pretext of public security, the ideas and concepts dealing with public space are increasingly informed by surveillance and control. The question of whether public space itself could then pose a threat is analysed by Anna Minton. Léopold Lambert focuses on public space as militarized environment in the aftermath of terrorist attacks. Kathrin Röggla considers the role of public space in post-democracy, while architect Doreen Heng Liu outlines the factors in any sustainable development of urban public space. Is public space a “third space” where strategies can be developed to counter an all-dominant and appropriating commercialisation? Are the struggles in public space only the harbingers of gentrification? – core questions addressed by architect Arno Brandlhuber in the closing panel.

This 36-hour Factory of Thought aims to develop a more concrete understanding of approaches to the complex expectations placed on public space. The Kooperative für Darstellungspolitik’s spatial design facilitates concentrated thought in parallel structures for kick-off speeches and think tanks, discussions, interviews and artistic interventions, and provides room for informal exchanges in open platforms.

Urban Encounters is pleased to announce its eighth annual conference focusing on street-based urban photographic practices. As part of a wider programme of events around London exploring critical ideas addressing how ‘the street’ might be experienced, imagined, represented, performed and archived; Urban Encounters hosts a number of international artists, photographers, urbanists and academics concerned with theorizing, researching and creating visual work around street spaces.

The conference panels re-examine what is traditionally understood by the genre of ‘street photography’, an increasingly popular but also highly contentious and at times, problematic set of practices. Speakers discuss issues relating to aesthetics; the politics and ethics of street-work; notions of locality and flow; performativity, mediation and the disruption of ‘authenticity’.

This year’s conference opens on Friday 23 October, 18.30–20.00 with a keynote address by London based artist Rut Blees Luxemburg, whose large-scale photographic works explore the public spaces of the city. The keynote event is followed by a drinks reception to celebrate the opening of this year’s Urban Photo Fest. The keynote on Saturday 24 October is given by internationally acclaimed sociologist Saskia Sassen. Further speakers include Mitra Tabrizian, Julia Schulz-Dornburg, Vanley Burke  and Charlie Phillips.  The second day of the conference also includes a series of breakout seminars designed to encourage audience participation within research, theory and visual practice, which aim to build upon the conference presentations and audience discussions. Urban Encounters is part of the five day Urban Photo Fest programme supported by Openvisor, the Centre for Urban and Community Research, Goldsmiths, Kingston University and Photofusion.
