In my art practice and theoretical work I investigate the relationships between contemporary art, institutions, and microsocial infrastructures through archive art, performance, public art, and institutional critique. My works are processes which exist through a continual rearticulation of their archives. Temporarily situated within institutional, urban, and archaeological contexts, they establish alternative microsocial infrastructures of memory and publicity while exploring forms of desistance within the normative conditions of institutional participation and the public appearance of artworks. My work has been presented in the United States, Greece, Germany, Mexico, China, Italy, the United Kingdom, Turkey, and elsewhere, including at the 9th and 12th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, the São Paulo Biennial (Urban Void, 2007), the University of Kassel in collaboration with documenta 12 (2007), and the MIT Museum (2018). My works are included in public and private collections, including the MIT Museum, the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, the Rose Goldsen Archive of New Media Art, and the J. F. Costopoulos Foundation.
I introduced the concept of performative archiving through a series of art projects, and presented it in the research program Archive Public (University of Patras, 2012) and at international institutions such as the Skulptur Projekte Münster Archiv (2018). I co-founded the plural person Gregorios Farmakis and I was a member of the urban action group Urban Void. I have been a Research Fellow at the Center for Advanced Visual Studies (CAVS), MIT; the Department of Cultural History and Theory and the Department of Musicology and Media Studies at Humboldt University; and a Fellow in Hellenic Studies at the Harvard Center for Hellenic Studies. I have taught at the MIT School of Architecture and Planning and at other universities. My essays have been published in Greek and international academic journals and edited volumes. My publications include Constructing the Public Sphere: Topical Works 2002–07 (2007), Urban Void: Actions 1998–2006 (co-editor, 2008), Acts of Co-Utterance (2008), and Archive Public: Performing Archives in Public Art. Topical Interpositions (2012).
Στην καλλιτεχνική και θεωρητική μου εργασία διερευνώ τις σχέσεις σύγχρονης τέχνης, θεσμών και μικρο-κοινωνικών υποδομών μέσα από πρακτικές αρχείου, επιτέλεσης, δημόσιας τέχνης και θεσμικής κριτικής. Τα έργα μου είναι διαδικασίες που εμφανίζονται με τη μορφή αρχείων σε συνεχή αναδιαμόρφωση. Εγκαθίστανται προσωρινά σε θεσμικά, αστικά και αρχαιολογικά περιβάλλοντα, όπου συγκροτούν εναλλακτικές μικρο-κοινωνικές υποδομές μνήμης και δημοσιότητας, διερευνώντας μορφές στάσης (desistance) στις κανονικότητες της θεσμικής συμμετοχής και της δημόσιας εμφάνισης των έργων. Έχουν παρουσιαστεί σε πολλές διοργανώσεις τέχνης στις ΗΠΑ, Ελλάδα, Γερμανία, Μεξικό, Κίνα, Ιταλία, Αγγλία, Τουρκία και αλλού, ανάμεσα στις οποίες, στην 9η και 12η Μπιενάλε Αρχιτεκτονικής Βενετίας, στη Μπιενάλε του Σάο Πάολο (Αστικό Κενό, 2007), στο Πανεπιστήμιο του Κάσελ σε σύμπραξη με την Documenta 12 (2007), στο MIT Museum (2018). Βρίσκονται σε ιδιωτικές συλλογές και μουσεία, όπως τα MIT Museum, Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, Rose Goldsen Archive of New Media Art, ίδρυμα Ι.Φ. Κωστοπούλου.
Πρότεινα την έννοια της επιτελεστικής αρχειακής δράσης (performative archiving) μέσα από μια σειρά έργων και την παρουσίασα στο ερευνητικό πρόγραμμα Archive Public (Πανεπιστήμιο Πατρών, 2012) και σε διεθνείς θεσμούς, όπως το Skulptur Projekte Münster Archiv (2018). Είμαι συνιδρυτής του πληθυντικού προσώπου Γρηγόριος Φαρμάκης και µέλος της οµάδας αστικής δράσης Αστικό Κενό. Έχω διατελέσει Ερευνητής στο Κέντρο Ανωτάτων Εικαστικών Ερευνών (CAVS) του ΜΙΤ, στο Τμήμα Ιστορίας και Θεωρίας του Πολιτισμού και στο Τμήμα Μουσικολογίας και Επιστήμης των Μέσων του Πανεπιστημίου Humboldt, καθώς και Εταίρος ελληνικών σπουδών στο Harvard Center for Hellenic Studies (2021-22). Δίδαξα στη Σχολή Αρχιτεκτόνων, ΜΙΤ και σε άλλα πανεπιστήμια. Κείμενά μου έχουν δημοσιευθεί σε ελληνικά και διεθνή επιστημονικά περιοδικά και συλλογικούς τόμους.
